DePuy ASR Hip Systems Hold 37 Percent Failure Rate, Internal Report Reveals

The first ASR hip replacement lawsuit against DePuy Orthopaedics opened in Los Angeles on January 25, 2013 with Loren Kransky as the plaintiff. Kransky’s case was chosen to be the first to be heard since the plaintiff has cancer and may not live longer.

DePuys-ASR-devices-may-trigger-health-complicationsDuring the pre-trial preparations, documents were opened and one particular paper that drew great interest was the post-recall analysis done by DePuy. In that report, it was revealed that the failure rate of their ASR hip replacement systems was 37 percent in five years. This figure was substantially higher than their original estimate of one-eighth of the total.

This failure rate would appear consistent with those from other countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia. The British Hip Society had earlier revealed that revision rates were around 21 percent in four years and to as much as 49 percent in six years.

This internal report, together with the data from other countries, may prove vital to the ongoing trial against DePuy Orthopaedics. With a historical data of around five percent failure rate for hip replacement surgeries, the 37 percent of DePuy would certainly appear highly irregular.
